Tennis Pair Stuns

September 10th, 2010 | By Max Calenberg | Section: Sports

Cookies and milk. Peanut butter and jelly. And, now, after the Women’s tennis match this past Saturday,: Fitch and Feldman.   On Sat. September 4, the doubles pair of Catherine Fitch ’13 and Hanna Feldman ’14 took second place in the second doubles division at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational.

In the first round, the duo won 6-2, 6-3 against a pair from Illinois Wesleyan University, followed by a 6-3, 7-6 win against a twosome from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Finally, they were defeated in the championship 6-3, 6-3 by a pair from UW-Whitewater.

Feldman, a first-year from Los Angeles, was content with the outcome of the tournament.

“I was pretty happy because those UW schools are huge and our school’s pretty small,” Feldman said. “The fact that we were able to beat doubles teams from those schools kind of says something.”

The two, who had never played together before the tournament, felt themselves becoming more cohesive as the day went on.

“We played better teams as the day went on, so it might have felt like we were winning by less and less,” Fitch said. “But I think I finally started to figure how to play with Hanna and vice versa.”

For the remainder of the season it is uncertain whether   or not the two will play together again, as Fitch will likely return to playing with her doubles partner from last year, Constanza Alarcon Cordon ’13.

Regardless of the how the rest of the season goes, Fitch sees the value of being forced to play in less than comfortable conditions.

“It is kind of nice just to be thrown into it all of a sudden just remember that yes you can play good tennis, that yes these girls are good but you might be better. You might be able to beat them,” Fitch said. “It is nice to get that feeling again.”
