Grinnell Cribs Crawl: The High Life

September 17th, 2009 | By Samira Sadeque | Section: Features

Grinnell’s High Street has heard its fair share of weird house names, but The House Across the Street from Blank House House is certainly the longest, and residents Vincent Geels ’10, James Meinert ’10, Phil Hagen ’10 and Greg Rossi ’10 are proud of it.

“Phil and I picked the name,” Geels said. “We really wanted a name that would have the word ‘house’ in it as many times possible. We figured it’d be awesome when we’d throw parties—the name of the house would sound so cool—so we came up with this.”

Across the road from a “blank” and bland looking white house (hence the name), and tucked behind trees on the edge of High Street just feet from the train tracks, the house seems perfect for the gang because of all the messy cooking and partying that they are up for. “Only two of us are without a dining plan—that’d be Phil and I,” Geels said. “So I cook a lot and bake. As for Phil, he just eats cottage cheese. Anything inside a can that is edible is fine with him.”

While it is a college house and messiness is inevitable, some areas need to stay as blank and spotless as their namesake. “I always need the kitchen to be clean for cooking, and these guys have been helping,” Geels said.

Of all the houses off campus, the house across the street from blank house house seems a fine house in which to be housed—especially if one likes houses. And long, lengthy, redundant, repetitive sentences.
