Queer publication ‘GoGo’ premiers

December 4th, 2009 | By Jumi Bello | Section: Arts

GoGo is the newest queer publication on campus, launched by Stonewall Resource Center. Editor Mario Macias ’11 wanted to create a publication on campus that highlights writings by students on sexuality and body image.
“It is a literary magazine to voice and reflect on the sexualities that make this campus essentially Grinnellian, what makes Grinnell queer,” Macias said. “I feel like this college is always flagging about how queer-friendly it is, so it surprised me that we didn’t have a textual space in which to discuss issues of sex, feminism, transgender, body issues and love, of course.”
Macias believes that the first issue will establish a strong tone for the magazine. It will cover a breadth of topics, from abstinence to body image issues and sexual stereotypes.
The contributors are as diverse as the pieces themselves.
“Even though GoGo is flagged as a queer publication does not imply that all our contributors identify as queer. In this issue, we have some hetero-oriented pieces,” Macias said. “It’s still part of that queer aesthetic that Grinnell has, it’s about the many sexualities that this campus holds and less about the binary between homo and hetero.”
With help from other students in the SRC, GoGo has steadily accumulated submissions from students all over campus.
The publication will be released this Friday, Dec. 4, with a party in celebration in the Stonewall Resource Center at 7 p.m. GoGo will be accepting submissions all year on any topics that fall under the umbrella of sexuality and body image. They have an open staff and welcome any students to join in the process of making GoGo issues throughout the year.
