The men’s soccer team dominated Ripon College 5-0 in its final game of the season last Saturday. Despite scores by Antonio Dimarco ’18, Elliot Meyer ’15, Joey Brown ’15 and Michael Hurley ’16, Grinnell fell short of qualifying for the Midwest Conference Tournament. The team finished the season with a 9-3-5 overall record and 5-2-3 in Conference play.

Nevertheless, the team achieved monumental success this season. Grinnell played 11 games without allowing a goal, setting a school record for most shutouts in a season. Along with the record-breaking shutout rate, goalkeeper Isaiah Tyree ’15 set school records in save percentage (.959) and goals against average (.22). His save percentage mark leads the nation as well. The Pioneers also suffered only three losses this entire season—the fewest by the team since 1994.

“Finishing the season with 11 shutouts points to the fact that even though we didn’t make it into the tournament, we are one of the best teams in the country,” Tyree said.

Brown credits the team’s formidable defensive line for this year’s success.

“We had a really good defensive year [and] our record shows that,” he said. “It’s something we take pride in. It’s disappointing that we didn’t make it into the tournament, considering that we’re a strong defensive team, but I think [our record this year] shows that our team is comprised of an amazing group of guys. I think all of our back players should be recognized, and are definitely the reason why we’ve had zero goals scored against us during the last seven games.”

Despite the numerous accomplishments the team has accrued over the past few months, the end of its season is reasonably bittersweet. The seniors will leave the team in younger players’ hands to continue their legacies.

Brown expressed faith in the capabilities of the team’s underclassmen to step up next year. Players like Dimarco and Artis Curiskis ’18 will be counted on to serve as important assets for the team in the wake of their predecessors.

Tyree also has confidence in his successors.

“Although there are a lot of seniors graduating, I think that the guys who are still here grew a lot this year and will continue on the mentality and strength that our team showed this year,” he said.
